What is consulting?
According to the Oxford Dictionary, a consultant is someone who is "engaged in the business of giving expert advice to people working in a specific field". As a consultant, your job is to advise a company on a problem that they need help solving. This usually includes working with a team to come up with solutions that will be presented to the client. Projects may last a few weeks to a few months and early roles generally involve traveling to client sites during these times. Some firms may start you as a generalist, meaning you are placed on a variety of different types of projects. However, advanced degree consultants at some firms will be placed on projects related to their area of expertise.

These are a brief overview of the main types of roles you may find in consulting. However, these roles are more specific to being a consultant. There are many additional jobs within a consulting firm that you may choose to pursue. The exact title of roles as well as the hierarchy may differ between firms as well.
